‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’: 1 Iconic Scene Was Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock

Many fans went into Spider-Man: Homecoming skeptical of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe would make Spider-Man feel fresh after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s runs as Peter Parker. But the film was a success, thanks to Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter and because of other factors. There is one scene, in particular, that stands out in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And, according to one of the writers, it was an homage to the works of Alfred Hitchcock.

In the weeks leading up to the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, fans on Twitter engaged in a watch party of all Spider-Man films. During their viewing of Spider-Man: Homecoming, one of the movies’ writers, Jonathan Goldstein, joined them.

When they got to the part in the movie when Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture, was driving Peter and Liz to the homecoming dance, Goldstein revealed the inspiration for the scene. He said, “This driving scene was full-on homage to Hitchcock where the audience knows more than one character and the delicious suspense as he puts the pieces together.”

Alfred Hitchcock was a pioneer in filmmaking and directed over 50 films. He was known as the “Master of Suspense,” thanks to his influence in the thriller genre. Many different defining features of a Hitchcock movie continue to influence films today, including Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, is the main antagonist in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The audience knew his identity from the very beginning. But we had no idea, and neither did Peter, that he would be connected to another known character.

During the film’s climax, Peter asks his crush at school, Liz, to the homecoming dance. She says yes. And so when the night comes, Peter arrives at her house, and when the front door opens, there is Adrian Toomes. As it turned out, Adrian is Liz’s father. Peter immediately recognized him as Vulture, but Adrian didn’t place him at first because of Peter’s Spider-Man suit.

However, Peter cannot keep his cool while Adrian drives him and Liz to the dance. The villain puts two and two together and realizes that Peter is Spider-Man.

It’s an intense scene full of suspense and a significant turning point in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Many Marvel fans still talk about this memorable moment, and it’s easy to see why now, knowing that Hitchcock inspired it.

At the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Vulture is sent to prison. But in one of the post-credits scenes, another inmate approaches Adrian and tells him that he heard that he knows Spider-Man’s identity. Adrian denies this, but as most Marvel fans know, post-credits scenes often set up future films.

Keaton plays Adrian Toomes in the Sony Spider-Man Universe film Morbius. In the movie, Michael Morbius, played by Jared Leto, tries to cure his rare blood disease, but he gains a form of vampirism. It’s unknown how Vulture will tie into the movie or if the multiverse will be mentioned.

Keaton told The Hollywood Reporter that the explanation of the movie multiverse confused him. He said, “I’m nodding like I know what the f*** they’re talking about. I go, ‘Uh-huh.’ And I’m thinking, ‘You may as well be explaining quantum physics right now to me. All I know is I just know my guy. And I know the basics.'”

Keaton continued, “So finally, they were looking at me, and they just started laughing. They said, ‘You don’t know what we’re talking about, do you?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t, no idea what you’re talking about.'”

The second sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: No Way Home, premieres exclusively in theaters on Dec. 17. And Morbius releases on Jan. 28, 2022.
