Will Patrick Stewart Play Professor X Again After ‘Doctor Strange 2’? The Actor Teases Answers

Many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were surprised to hear Patrick Stewart’s voice in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. The actor previously claimed that he had retired from playing Professor X, but Stewart reprised his role in Doctor Strange 2. Now, fans wonder if the MCU movie is his final outing as the mutant.

Thanks to trailers, fans knew that Patrick Stewart would appear as a Professor X variant in Doctor Strange 2. But that didn’t make his cameo any less epic.

Toward the middle of the Doctor Strange sequel, the Illuminati captured and imprisoned Stephen Strange and America Chavez. The group of superheroes included Mordo, Black Bolt, Captain Carter, Reed Richards, Captain Marvel, and Professor X. They explained to Stephen that their version of Doctor Strange recklessly used the Darkhold in an attempt to defeat Thanos. As a result, he triggered a universe-destroying incursion. So they killed their Stephen.

The Illuminati told the MCU’s Stephen that they believed he could be as dangerous as their version of him. But before they could decide what to do with him, the Scarlet Witch appeared and killed the Illuminati, except for Mordo.

Unfortunately, Professor X’s appearance in Doctor Strange 2 was short-lived. However, there’s a chance that it’s not the last time fans see Stewart in the MCU.

The actor shares whether or not ‘Doctor Strange 2’ was his final time playing Professor X

During an interview with Variety, Patrick Stewart discussed returning to his role as Professor X in Doctor Strange 2.

“I was a little unsure at first if it was a wise thing to do,” the actor shared. “Given that Logan had been such a powerful movie, and we watched him die in Hugh Jackman’s arms. So having seen [Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness] on Monday night, I’m very happy and very proud that I’ve been part of that … It was a very, very different world from the X-Men movies, with references here and there, of course. But I was very, very happy.”

When asked whether or not there was a chance he would play Professor X again, Stewart answered, “Charles Xavier? Yeah. There may be. You know, the whole X-Men comic series is so huge, so vast, there might be an opportunity in which he comes back. We’ll see.”

It sounds like Stewart would be open to reprising his role as Professor X following his appearance in Doctor Strange 2. However, the right opportunity would have to arise for him to do so.

The X-Men could join the MCU

In 2019, Disney officially acquired 20th Century Fox, which held the rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four. So that means that Disney, which also owns Marvel Studios, could officially incorporate these Marvel characters into the MCU.

Marvel already has a Fantastic Four movie in the works, which will be a part of Phase Four. And the studio will produce Deadpool 3, which is also in development.

Back in 2019, Kevin Feige also announced that Marvel was developing a mutants film, which would include the X-Men. Unfortunately, there has been no more news regarding that movie.

It’s only a matter of time before the MCU introduces the X-Men, though. So Patrick Stewart might have another chance to play Professor X on the big screen again.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.
