‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Producer Gives Clues About Where the Series Leaves the Big 3

NBC fans can’t wait to see the This Is Us Season 6 finale, as it’s the final episode of the series. In episode 16, “Family Meeting,” the Big Three came together to decide the next steps in caring for their mother, Rebecca Pearson. Now, This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17, “The Train,” will likely show Rebecca’s death. Where does this leave the Big Three in the end? Here’s what a producer hinted.

The ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 17 trailer hints at Rebecca Pearson’s death

“Family Meeting,” brought the Pearsons together after Miguel’s death. While Miguel had every intention of caring for Rebecca until she died of Alzheimer’s disease, he succumbed to his own illness, leaving the Big Three to make major decisions regarding Rebecca’s care. Kevin stepped up to the plate and decided it’d be best for him and Sophie to care for Rebecca despite Kate offering to be her mother’s caretaker. Ultimately, Kevin went forth with his plan.

The This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17 trailer shows Rebecca’s final moments.

“Things are happening quickly now,” a nurse tells Kevin and Randall regarding their mother. “I don’t see her making it through the night. I think it’s time to start saying goodbyes.”

Beth Pearson also spoke to Rebecca about how much Rebecca taught her about motherhood. “All these years, I was doing my best impression of you,” Beth tells her.

At the end of the trailer, Randall tells Beth he isn’t sure what to say — but he just wants to “get it right.”

“You will,” Beth tells him. “You always do.”

The This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17 trailer shows Randall and Kevin with their mother in her final days — but Kate’s missing from the group. It’s likely she has to make travel arrangements on short notice to say her goodbyes to her mother. Either way, fans will certainly find out where she is and where she ends up, as producer Isaac Aptaker hinted to Entertainment Weekly that episode 16 sets up the Big Three’s future.

“It’s an episode that really sets the stage for where the Big Three wound up and where we’ll leave them at the end of this series, and how different that is from where they were when we met them in our pilot,” Aptaker hinted.

Show creators brought fans on a time-traveling journey through episode 16. Fans got to see the flash-forward sequences that were previously teased. Now, executive producer Elizabeth Berger says the end of episode 16 brings the flash-forwards of family members gathering into the present day.

“By the time this episode is through, we’re really teed up to be at that place,” she tells Entertainment Weekly.

What will happen in the series finale?

If This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17, “The Train,” features Rebecca’s death, what will happen during the finale?

The cast and crew of the This Is Us Season 6 finale haven’t given much away in terms of what fans can expect. But the title, “Us,” gives a clue. Many fans suspect Kevin’s painting will come back into play, as the painting was about life, death, and family.

“I painted this because I felt like the play was about life,” Kevin tells his nieces in season 1. “Life is full of color. We each get to come along and add our own color to the painting, you know? And even though it’s not very big — the painting — you sort of having to figure that it goes on forever, you know, in each direction?”

Along with the painting, many fans suspect the season finale will contain several flash-forwards of the future generations of Pearsons.

This Is Us Season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
