‘Dune’ Actor Josh Brolin Addresses What Happened to His Character in the First Movie

Many fans are eagerly awaiting Dune Part 2 from director Denis Villeneuve. The first Dune ends in an open-ended way, leaving plenty of paths for these characters to go. However, one character’s fate is left unclear. Actor Josh Brolin, who plays Gurney Halleck, provides an update on what happened to his Dune character in the first movie and teases his role in the Dune Part 2

In Dune, Gurney is the weapons expert for House Atreides and mentor to Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet). He is a tough but kind character who fights with a high level of ferocity. The last we saw of Brolin’s character, he was charging into battle against a large army of soldiers for the House Harkonnen.

He was surrounded by explosions and his own men being killed, but we never saw what happened to him. Book readers will know that this is not the end of Gurney. In the book, Gurney and 73 other soldiers survive this battle and Gurney begins to become a powerful figure on Arrakis. Paul welcomes his old friend into the Fremen after Paul becomes the leader of the group.

Josh Brolin addresses Gurney’s disappearance in the first ‘Dune’ movie

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about his Amazon Prime series Outer Range, Josh Brolin discusses his role in Dune. The Avengers: Infinity war actor said that he was also confused about what happened to Gurney because he basically just disappeared. However, after reading the script for Dune Part 2, Brolin has a better understanding of why this happened.

“So having just read the second one about two weeks ago, I now know why that [sendoff] was the way it was,” Brolin said. “So I think it was a good place [to leave Gurney]. When I watched it, I was like, ‘Where did I go?’ I think that was the first reaction. ‘That’s it?’ But that was all selfish.”

Brolin previously mentioned that he is getting more in shape to get ready for the upcoming sequel. The sequel will feature more development for Paul and Zendaya’s characters, but it is unknown just how much Brolin will be in it.

Brolin teases another movie with Denis Villeneuve

Dune is the second time that Brolin has worked with director Villeneuve. He previously worked with the director on Sicario. The movie did get a sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, but Villeneuve did not return to direct it. Brolin told The Hollywood Reporter that a script does exist for a third movie, but nothing has been approved yet.

“It’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds,” Brolin shared. “It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it.”

It’s also not clear if Villeneuve would return for a third Sicario movie, but he probably won’t anytime soon as the director is very busy with Dune Part 2

Dune is currently streaming on HBO Max.
