Brie Larson Didn’t Realize She Was Auditioning For ‘Trainwreck’ When She Got Lunch With Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow

Before Brie Larson gained notoriety in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she appeared in films like Trainwreck. As Captain Marvel, Larson personifies an epic hero, handling action scenes and dramatic moments with grace and intensity. However, Larson has been a mainstay in the entertainment industry ever since she was a child star. She’s acted in everything from TV dramas to raucous film comedies.

Though Larson is a film veteran, some things still manage to catch her off guard. In a 2015 interview, she opened up about an experience with Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow where she didn’t even realize she was auditioning for a role.

Larson had a supporting role in the 2015 comedy Trainwreck, opposite Schumer. However, Larson didn’t even know that she was auditioning when Schumer and director Apatow decided to cast her in the film. Larson opened up about the experience to Jimmy Kimmel. “Judd had called me — which I still don’t know how he got my cell phone number — but he called me and said ‘Hey, do you know Amy Schumer?'” Larson explained. “I said no, and he said, ‘Can you come get lunch with us?'”

Larson noted that she met with Apatow and Schumer for lunch multiple times over the week, confusing both the actor and her agent. Eventually, she said she figured out she was being considered for a role in their upcoming film project, Trainwreck. Additionally, she wasn’t clear on whether it was a comedy or a drama for a while.

In Trainwreck, Larson plays Kim Townsend, the serious sister of Schumer’s hard-partying journalist character. Although the film is a comedy, Larson plays many of her scenes in a deadpan manner.

Working on the film helped create a tight bond between Larson and Schumer.

The two remain close. In 2017, Larson told Vanity Fair Schumer was part of a supportive text chain, which also involved Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence. Since the two get along so well, maybe they’ll reunite for another movie project in the future.

Although Larson and Schumer haven’t had the chance to work together on a big project since Trainwreck, Larson has remained very busy. The same year that she acted in Trainwreck, Larson appeared in the drama Room, ultimately winning an Academy Award thanks to her work in the intense film.

In 2019, Larson became a Marvel superhero. She played the lead in the blockbuster film Captain Marvel and appeared in Avengers: Endgame. With a promising future in the MCU ahead of her, Larson will likely continue to diversify her film portfolio, too. She directed her first movieUnicorn Store, and has other exciting projects on the horizon. And we can assume when she goes out to lunch with someone, she now knows if it’s an audition or not.
